Jo Madan attended a workshop held by Alison Battisby of Avocado Social to learn about the hottest Social Media trends of 2019! Here’s her summary:
Let’s start with the most popular feature right now across social platforms. You guessed it… stories!
Snapchat’s original story feature is now also a popular element of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.
Which one do you think is most used? At the event, we placed our bets on Instagram, but with over 4.5 billion pictures and videos uploaded daily, WhatsApp’s story feature is actually the most used worldwide! Instagram came in second place, closely followed by Facebook.
You might be surprised to hear that LinkedIn will also be launching a story feature this year too!
Video content is everything this year. The most consumed forms of content online are short videos and GIFs – or ‘Snack Images’.
TikTok, a newly released app, had about 2 billion users in its first couple of months after launch. The app allows you to shoot short clips, add video effects and become a star.
IGTV and Live videos are still unknown territories for many, but along with apps like TikTok, their usage is booming. Users feel like they are more connected with their followers, as the medium allows them to be more personable.
The rise of Dark Social isn’t as dodgy as it sounds. Dark Social just refers to social media content that gets shared via direct messaging, and a result, can’t be tracked. Users are sharing more content through private messaging now more than ever. It’s all going down in DMs!
If you feel like your social media engagement is dropping, try reaching out directly to people with your new content. It could be an effective way to promote your new posts and invite them to join your live feeds.
Back to reality
There seems to be a rise in real-life content online now, as vloggers are becoming more open about the reality of their lives. No one actually wakes up looking like they stepped off the red carpet, and followers prefer to see people ‘telling it how it is’.
I really enjoyed the event and left with a lot to think about. So, the next time you find yourself in need of a boost on social media, try taking advantage of these trends!
