6 Steps To Landing Your Dream Job

Search jobs

So, you want to land your dream job? You aren’t the only one! But you are in the right place to unlock an advantage over hundreds of other applicants.

It takes a lot of hard work and determination to land your dream job, but following these six simple steps will put you on the right path:

Step 1: Define what you’re looking for

A good place to start is by defining what your dream job actually is. What do you value in a company? What has been your favourite role up to this point? What really makes you tick?

Answering these questions may be more difficult than you think, but you need a clear idea of what you’re looking for before you start searching.

Step 2: Clean up your social media

Your friends might understand the irony of the questionable pose you’re making in your Facebook profile photo, but potential employers might not. Get rid of any content on your social media accounts that may be deemed inappropriate before you start applying for that dream job.

Don’t just see social media as something that might hold you back though, dusting off that LinkedIn account you forgot about could prove invaluable. LinkedIn gives you an opportunity to control what potential employers discover about your strengths and personal brand.

Step 3: Fine-tune your CV

Don’t just send your generic CV into the job search-abyss. Optimise it for each position by looking closely at job descriptions and focus on showcasing your most relevant skills. There will be differences between every role and company you apply for.

Remember that your CV is likely one of many being read during the recruitment process, so do the person reading it a favour by offering a clear, concise and well-presented insight into your ability.

Step 4: Build a digital portfolio

While a fine-tuned CV will show potential employers that you could be a good fit for their company, your digital portfolio will reinforce the message with evidence.

Technical job searchers can showcase their abilities with the build of a website, and creatives can provide links to examples of their best work. WordPress offers free website hosting and templates to get you started.

Step 5: Do your research

You receive an invitation to interview for your dream job. Result! Now the work really begins. Your interviewer won’t ask you to recite the entire history of their company from memory, but they will expect you to have an understanding of what they do and what the role entails.

Treat this step like revision. Read key website pages such as ‘About Us’,  keep revisiting the job description and take notes until you’re able to explain the business and vacancy to a friend.

Step 6: Go back to basics

It’s the night before your interview and you’re just hours away from meeting your next potential employer, it’s time to go back to basics. Organise your outfit, plan your route and prepare any supporting material you want to take into the interview.

Starting your day feeling prepared will make a massive difference to your confidence and will allow you to focus on selling yourself. A firm handshake, good eye contact and sending a thank you email following your interview are other basics worth remembering.
