5 Ways to find a job in London

London is a great place to be for many reasons. Aside from the historic sights, great shopping opportunities, the culture and the array of fun activities available, one big reason to move to London is job opportunities. Especially within the digital and tech market, opportunities are on the rise. There are exciting start-ups in Tech City, an upsurge of digital agencies across London, and a number of companies that are making the move into digital. It’s therefore no surprise that thousands of people decide to move into the city every year!

Of course, while there are more jobs in London, there are also a lot more people! If you’re not already living in London, it’s a good idea to try and find a job before making the move. After all, moving to a new city is stressful enough without having to job hunt once you get there! Here are 5 tips on how to find a job in London (or any new city for that matter) before you move there:

1. Make the most of LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great place to start when looking for a new job. When searching the “Jobs” tab on LinkedIn, you’re able to pick a “location”.

It’s also a good idea to put your current location to “London” so you come up in searches by employers and recruiters when they’re looking for candidates with your skill set. However, be careful if you’re still working with your company in your current location and don’t want them to know you’re looking to move.

2. Join groups on LinkedIn that are London specific 

LinkedIn groups are a great place to find out about industry news and to network with likeminded industry professionals. Contribute to the groups, see who’s active and try to connect with people who work at companies you’re interested in!

There are also many groups that are specifically set up to promote open positions within a specific industry, a set location or even a particular company. If your current employer doesn’t know you’re looking, make sure your privacy settings are in place to hide groups from your LinkedIn profile.

3. Find London based recruiters that specialise in your field

Recruiters are always on the lookout for new talent. When you’re looking to move, it’s a good idea to contact recruiters that specialise in your field and contact them to let them know you are looking for positions in London. After all, we may be looking for someone with your skillset in a great company and all you have to do is let us know you’re looking!

4. Use the cover letter to avoid location-based confusion

When applying for jobs in London, make sure to point out you’re looking to move in your cover letter. That way if you have your address on your CV or have to fill it in on an application form, there will be no confusion.

5. Plan ahead when booking interviews

Especially when you don’t live in London, it’s worth planning a short trip beforehand and schedule as many interviews as possible into that time frame. It will save you money and give you a goal to work towards.
